These Doctor-Approved Diets Help Women Over 50 Fulfill All Their Health Needs

Registered dietitian Kayla Hulsebus, MS, RD, LD, explains that women can alter their diets to better adapt to their bodies’ natural changes. Below, Hulsebus shares the best diets, or rather, lifestyles, for women over 50 that can, “help support healthy muscle mass, hormone balance, and proper weight management.

 Mediterranean:

The Mediterranean diet is great for heart health and may prevent cancer and diabetes. It doesn’t restrict or eliminate any food groups, but instead encourages everything in moderation. Hulsebus notes that it emphasizes carbohydrates from fruits and vegetables, in addition to whole grains, which have a lot of fiber and will leave you feeling full for longer.

It has plenty of omega-3 fats, found in foods like fish and olive oil, that also boost satiety in addition to assisting with hormone production. It’s also high in protein, both in plant and animal-based products. This protein is important for women over 50 who need it to fight muscle loss that happens with age.

Single super mom doing whatever it takes for her son

Briana Williams was not about to let going into labor keep her from taking her final exams at Harvard Law School. She did not let being a single mom stop her from graduating from the prestigious university. And she sure as heck wasn't going to let anything stop her from caring for her baby while simultaneously becoming a lawyer.

The 24-year-old is currently in Los Angeles, studying for the California Bar exam, and taking care of her 1-year-old daughter with a big boost from her father.

"She's the most amazing kid of all time," she told InsideEdition.com Wednesday.

Her mom isn't bad, either.

When she got pregnant last year, and the father made it clear he wasn't on board for the long haul, Williams decided to go it alone. She never considered an abortion, she said. Instead, she started planning. She arranged to take her Family Law class final at home, in the last weeks of her pregnancy, so she could get it out of the way before her baby came.

As it turned out, she went into labor while taking the test. She went to the hospital and was given an epidural, she said. As soon as the drugs kicked in, she finished up the exam. The pain she felt was "definitely a 10," she said. But once the epidural took effect, she felt only a little "uncomfortable." Seven hours after putting down her pen, she gave birth to Evelyn.

She finished her last year at Harvard in a sleep-deprived haze of middle-of-the-night feedings, diaper changes, undependable babysitters and going to school. Sometimes she had no one to take care of her baby, "so we just rolled into class together," she said.

Often, Evelyn spent the day in the Dean of Students' office, where she was well cared for while her mother was in a lecture hall.

"I'm going to be honest with you guys," she wrote in an Instagram post last week. "I didn't think I could do it. I did not think that, at 24 years old, as a single mom, I would be able to get through one of the most intellectually rigorous and challenging positions of my life," she said.

"This journey has been heart-wrenching."

But, she says, she wouldn't change a thing. "I pray that, for the sake of my baby, I will be an example," she wrote. "Evelyn, they said that because of you, I would't be able to do this. Just know that I did this BECAUSE OF YOU. Thank you giving me the strength and courage to be invincible. Let's keep beating all their odds, baby."

Williams put herself through college and law schools with student loans. She takes the Bar exam in July. She already has a job lined up, at a general litigation law firm, with a starting annual salary of $180,000.

But the light of her life is Evelyn, who now greets her mother's phone calls with a bright, "Hi momma!"

"She's so sweet," Williams says. "She is loving. She doesn't care who you are — she just likes you."

3 Superfoods for Supermoms

Prepared for the Day:   Keeping up your energy to host a tea party with your toddler after tossing around a football with your teenager, all while maintaining household tasks, requires superfoods for the supermom in you. Although the hustle and bustle of mommyhood may leave you desperate for a snack, hold off on salty chips or high-fat candy bars. Recharge your batteries with superfoods designed to energize and boost your immune system

Bananas:

When you need that extra boost of energy, a banana is a quick fix to keep you moving and motivated. Bananas are naturally fatigue-fighting thanks to the magnesium content, says Orsoni. “It’s why athletes go for a banana snack,” she says. “The banana is king of potassium, which boosts energy.”

Peaches and Nectarines:

A summertime family favorite, peaches and nectarines are a good source of vitamins A and C, says Galeaz. In addition, the brightly colored fruits also help keep mom’s skin healthy and boost her immune system. Whether you need a quick snack to keep you motivated or a sweet dessert to follow up lunch, peaches and nectarines are sure to satisfy.

Popcorn

Since corn is a natural whole grain, popcorn is a natural 100 percent whole grain super snack. Keep it heart-smart by using just a smidgen of salt and minimal oil, Galeaz suggests. Light versions of microwave popcorn are also great options for a midday snack. “Popcorn provides complex carbohydrates for sustained energy and high fiber, which helps provide a full, satisfied feeling to prevent overeating,” says Galeaz.

Super Mom Stories are the sweetest! Reecha

Do you remember the day you found out you were pregnant.

It all started with a few tears of joy, excitement, those funny baby kicks, worry, sleepless nights, anxiety and finally the happiest tears rolling down your cheeks as you held your baby for the first time in your arms.

And the very next moment forgetting all the pain you went through. Such is motherhood!
Every Mom you meet has a different story to share, you might relate to some and to some you might not. But there is definitely something you can learn from others!
Let's hear what Reecha, who worked with Ericsson and now is enjoying being a stay at home mom with her daughter.

Please share your experiences on motherhood and how it has changed you as a person?
Motherhood is magical!! It has made me feel very special. My lil one has given me strength to a level where I never thought I could go to take care of her. Despite of all the challenges a new mom feels - the feeling of happiness and joy can't be described in words. Even when I am asleep, there is some divine connection with my daughter that tells me I should check on her.
How do you relax while juggling between a gazillions of tasks you have everyday?
My motto is - when she sleeps I overlook all the clutter and spend some time with myself.. Watching TV...reading book may be for 30 min but I try to get my 30 min in a day to feel better and ready for rest of the day. Now that she has grown up - I also enjoy doing craft projects with her and I also engage her in the daily chores like clean up after playtime so it feels great when she gives me a helping hand. So it's all fun and learning together.

Where all have you used O’HappySunshine kurtas? How has it made your life easier?
I wish I found about OHS kurtas a little earlier...I feel if I had this Kurta earlier, my daughter wouldn't have had to go on formula feed. But I feel I made the best choice that I had at hand. No regrets, honestly!

Your advice for other new mothers who are starting on with their journey?
Motherhood is tiring and very stressful but all that effort is worth the one hug one smile of your little one. Enjoy every bit of it. Don't miss it. Kids grow up too fast and all you are left with is memories! Make sure you make good ones!

Every moment is interesting with my lil one. I really love my conversations with her when she wants to talk and behaves like me, make presents for me, feed me with her tiny hands. One day my daughter was not eating her food  and I told her if u will not eat, u will not become strong like mumma and then she came to me and said don't worry mumma it's ok don't worry.... and we had a hearty laugh together.
Thanks Reecha from SUPERMOMUSA Team

WE ARE SUPERMOMS™ Features Shelby

Meet this awesome SuperMom, Shelby, 41-year-old mother to Taylor-16, Savannah-10, and Jake-8.  Sadly, her first born child passed away 14 years ago, at the age of 3, due to a rare form of brain cancer.

Shelby has been a full-time employee at a large, well-known health care organization for nearly two decades and she is also a successful entrepreneur (Scentsy Distributor) who is doing business with her daughter, Taylor.  She hopes to instill great work ethics and help her daughter develop public speaking skills, teach her how to budget and the value in money management.

Shelby credits her first-born child, Alexandria, (who would have been 17-years-old today) for making her the mother she is today.  She described her as one of the most amazing people she had ever known and says, "She knew so much.  It was absolutely mind boggling!  I believe, with everything that I am, that God sent me Alexandria to teach me what I needed to learn.  Although, I miss her beyond words can describe, I feel truly blessed to have had her for the short time that I did."

Shelby, I admire your strength and the example you are to your children.  I could never imagine losing a child and I am inspired by the way you have managed to turn a tragedy into a beautiful story of perseverance.  Thank you for allowing me to share your story to help inspire other moms out there.  You are a true SuperMom! -❤️ Anne Hill
